Electric Mountain Bikes

What to consider when shopping for Electric Mountain Bikes

When shopping for electric mountain bikes, the most important starting point is understanding how you plan to ride. EMTBs come in two main builds: hardtail models, which have front suspension only and suit smoother trails, cross-country riding, and mixed-use commuting; and dual suspension models, which absorb impacts from both ends and are better suited to technical descents and rougher terrain. Beyond frame type, consider the level of motor assistance you need. Riders tackling steep climbs or longer trail sessions will benefit from higher torque motors, while those transitioning from regular mountain bikes may prefer a more natural-feeling assist. Battery range is also worth thinking about, especially if you plan extended rides or bikepacking trips across mixed surfaces. Electric mountain bikes open up trails to a wider range of riders and abilities, making them a great option whether you are new to off-road riding or looking to push further. Explore the different types of electric mountain bikes below to find the right fit for your riding needs.

Commonly Asked Questions about Electric Mountain Bikes

What is the difference between a hardtail and full-suspension electric mountain bike?

Hardtail electric mountain bikes have front suspension only, making them lighter and more affordable, which suits smoother trails and cross-country riding. Full-suspension models add rear suspension for better control and comfort on rougher, more technical terrain where traction and bump absorption matter most.

Are electric mountain bikes suitable for beginners?

Yes, electric mountain bikes are a great option for beginners because the motor assistance makes climbs and longer rides more manageable, reducing fatigue and building confidence on the trail. The added power helps newer riders keep up on group rides and explore more terrain without needing a high base fitness level.

How much does motor torque matter on an electric mountain bike?

Motor torque affects how well the bike assists you on steep climbs and technical sections, so higher torque is generally better for demanding off-road terrain. If you plan to ride hilly trails or carry extra gear, look for a motor with strong torque output to ensure the assistance feels responsive and natural.

How far can I ride on a single charge with an electric mountain bike?

Battery range varies depending on the motor, battery capacity, terrain, rider weight, and how much assistance you use. Hilly or technical trails will drain the battery faster than flat riding, so it is worth checking the battery size and considering a model with a larger capacity if you plan longer adventures.

Do I need a full-suspension electric mountain bike for trail riding?

Not necessarily. A hardtail electric mountain bike handles many trail conditions well and is a solid choice if you are riding cross-country or less technical terrain. Full-suspension becomes more worthwhile when you are regularly riding rough, rocky, or steep descents where rear wheel control and comfort make a noticeable difference.

How do I choose the right electric mountain bike for my riding style?

Start by thinking about the terrain you ride most often and your experience level on the trails. From there, consider whether a hardtail or full-suspension suits your needs, then look at motor torque and battery range to make sure the bike can handle the distances and elevation you are planning.

How do I find the right size bike?

Finding the right bike size can feel tricky, as different bike types have slightly different geometries. To make it easier, we’ve created a Find Your Size tool. Simply enter your height and inseam measurements (or those of the person you’re shopping for), and we’ll recommend the best size for each bike and pre-select the recommended option for you.

Not sure of your inseam measurement? No worries! We provide an estimated inseam measurement based on your height to help keep your recommendation as accurate as possible.

You can find the tool on each product page or at the top of categories when browsing. Try Find Your Size.
