Winter Cycling Gloves

If you are riding in temperatures below around 10 degrees Celsius, or in wet and windy conditions, regular cycling gloves are unlikely to provide enough warmth or protection. Winter cycling gloves are specifically designed with thermal insulation, windproof membranes, and often waterproof materials to keep your hands comfortable when conditions get harsh. A good rule of thumb is that once your hands start going numb or stiff mid-ride, it is time to upgrade to a dedicated winter glove.

Windproof gloves use a membrane or tight-knit outer layer to block cold air from penetrating the glove, which is effective in dry but bitterly cold conditions. Waterproof gloves go a step further by also preventing water from soaking through, making them the better choice for wet or rainy rides. Some gloves combine both properties, which is ideal if your winter riding involves unpredictable weather, though fully waterproof gloves can sometimes feel less breathable during high-output efforts.

The two most common approaches are merino wool linings and synthetic thermal fabrics. Merino wool offers natural warmth, breathability, and odour resistance, making it a great choice for longer or more varied rides. Synthetic thermal materials are often more durable and can be engineered to work alongside waterproof or windproof outer layers, so the best choice depends on whether you prioritise natural comfort or technical performance in extreme conditions.

This is a common concern, and it is worth paying attention to the palm and finger construction of any glove you consider. Quality winter cycling gloves are designed with grip-friendly materials on the palm and fingers so you can still operate your brakes and shifters confidently. However, gloves that are overly bulky or poorly fitted can reduce dexterity, so look for a snug fit and a glove that is proportionate to the conditions rather than the thickest option available.
