Three Cycling Events in 2021 for All Skill Levels

If you’re the kind of cyclist that loves the thrill of the starting line, then finding riding events will be the highlight of your year! New Zealand is crisscrossed by hundreds of gorgeous bike trails, each one home to year-round cycling events. Whether you ride a recreational bike or a mountain bike, you’ll have ample opportunities to jump in the saddle with hundreds of other excited cyclists, regardless of your skill level!

Without further ado, check out these upcoming cycling events in 2021 and get your cycling calendar sorted for the year.

The Big Easy & The Little Easy

The Big Easy and Little Easy in Hawke’s Bay happen over the same weekend on the same course, which makes it a two-in-one event great for all cyclists around!

This gorgeous ride is perfect for families or cyclists who shy away from the serious, sporty, ‘lycra-laden’ cycling events that populate the cycling calendar. The Big Easy follows the Hawke’s Bay Trails, traversing 28 kilometres in your complimentary event T-shirt, before concluding the ride at an awesome concert. This is actually a great way to test out your cycling nutrition for longer or tougher races; taking in food as you ride is a skill, after all!

The Little Easy has all the same benefits, but the distance is shorter, demanding only 12 kilometres. Either way, you’ll certainly be earning your Easter egg this year!

Rotorua Bike Festival

Next up is the Rotorua Bike Festival, a stunning collection of biking events taking place across the first ten days of October. From BMX trick comps to full-on mountain bike marathons, these ten days have the most incredible array of cycling events to choose from, no matter your discipline or skill level.

The events change every year depending on which organisers flock to it, but to give you an idea of the spread, here’s a quick look at some of the shenanigans the 2019 racers got up to:

·       Diwali Night Ride

·       Ride the Luge

·       Whaka 100 MTB Marathon

·       Low Key Super D Kids’ Event

·       Te Manawa Trick Comp

·       2W Enduro

·       Ride the Runway

The schedule for this year goes up in August, so make sure you bookmark the Rotorua Bike Festival page now!

The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge

Finally, we have The Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge. 99 Bikes is an official sponsor of this event, and since its inception 42 years ago, this event has only grown bigger and bigger.

On the 27th of November this year, you can participate in a facet of New Zealand’s cycling history. There are multiple categories to try out in this multi-day cycling extravaganza, so even if you’re not a long-distance cyclist, you can throw your hat in the ring. Some of the categories on offer include:

·       The 99 Bikes Round the Lake Challenge (160km)

·       The Half Lake (75km)

·       The Enduro (Twice round the lake)

·       The Lakesider (16km – perfect for recreational riders)

·       The Kids Ride (5km family race perfect for little ones)

Whether you’ve trained all year for the longest event on the register or you’re just looking for an excuse to ride the shores of Lake Taupo with your kids, this is the event for you. Be on the lookout for chances to win the spot prizes being handed out, you just might get lucky!
