Girls Balance Bikes

Balance bikes are generally suited to children from around 18 months up to 5 years old, depending on the child's height and development. The best way to check readiness is to ensure your child can sit on the seat with both feet flat on the ground and has enough coordination to steer and push themselves along.

The most important measurement is the seat height, which should allow your child to sit comfortably with both feet flat on the ground. Check the minimum and maximum seat height range of any bike you are considering and compare it against your child's inseam measurement for the best fit.

A lighter bike is generally easier for small children to handle, steer, and pick up if it falls over. As a rough guide, look for a bike that weighs no more than around 30 percent of your child's body weight so it remains manageable during play and learning.

Most balance bikes are best suited to smooth, hard surfaces like driveways, footpaths, and playgrounds. If your child will be riding on rougher or uneven terrain, look for a model with wider or air-filled tyres, as these provide better grip and a more comfortable ride outdoors.

A balance bike has no pedals, which encourages children to focus entirely on developing balance and steering before learning to pedal. Research and rider experience suggest that children who learn on balance bikes often transition to pedal bikes more quickly and confidently than those who use training wheels.

Look for a bike with a sturdy frame, simple construction, and minimal moving parts, as fewer components means less that can go wrong with everyday use. Puncture-proof foam or hard tyres can also reduce maintenance compared to air-filled tyres, making them a practical choice for young riders who ride frequently.

Finding the right bike size can feel tricky, as different bike types have slightly different geometries. To make it easier, we’ve created a Find Your Size tool. Simply enter your height and inseam measurements (or those of the person you’re shopping for), and we’ll recommend the best size for each bike and pre-select the recommended option for you.

Not sure of your inseam measurement? No worries! We provide an estimated inseam measurement based on your height to help keep your recommendation as accurate as possible.

You can find the tool on each product page or at the top of categories when browsing. Try Find Your Size.
