Balance bikes are generally suited to children from around 18 months up to 5 years old, depending on the child's size and development. The best way to check readiness is to see if your child can sit on the seat with both feet flat on the ground and scoot themselves around comfortably.

The most important measurement is the seat height. Your child should be able to place both feet flat on the ground while seated, which gives them control and confidence. Most balance bikes have adjustable seat posts, so there is some room to grow as your child develops.

Balance bikes remove the need for training wheels by teaching kids to balance and steer naturally using their feet. This approach builds the core skills needed for pedal cycling, and many children who learn on a balance bike transition to a pedal bike more quickly and easily than those who use training wheels.

A lighter frame makes it much easier for young children to handle, manoeuvre, and pick up the bike themselves. Look for a sturdy build that can handle outdoor surfaces like footpaths and grass, while still being light enough for your child to feel in control.

Most balance bikes are designed for general outdoor use including footpaths, parks, and backyards. If your child will be riding on rougher terrain, look for a model with wider or air-filled tyres, as these provide better grip and a smoother ride compared to foam tyres.
