A full tubeless conversion typically requires rim tape, tubeless valves, tyre sealant, and a tubeless-compatible tyre and rim. Depending on your riding style, you may also want to add tyre inserts for extra protection and support. It is worth checking your wheel and tyre compatibility before purchasing to make sure all components will work together correctly.

Tyre sealant dries out over time and generally needs to be refreshed every few months, though this can vary depending on the brand, climate, and how frequently you ride. Running low on sealant means your tyre loses its ability to self-seal small punctures, so regular checks are important for maintaining puncture protection. If you notice your tyre losing pressure more frequently, it is a good sign that a sealant top-up or full replacement is due.

Tubeless rim tape seals the spoke holes in your rim to create an airtight chamber, which is essential for a tubeless setup to hold pressure. Choosing the right tape comes down to matching the width to your rim's internal width and selecting a tape with enough adhesion to stay in place under pressure. Using the wrong width or a low-quality tape is one of the most common causes of tubeless setup failures, so it is worth getting this component right.

Tyre inserts sit inside the tyre and provide additional support, particularly when running lower tyre pressures on technical or rough terrain. They are most commonly used by mountain bikers riding aggressive trails, enduro, or downhill terrain, where the risk of pinch flats or rim strikes is higher. Casual riders and road cyclists may not need inserts, but they are a worthwhile upgrade for anyone pushing the limits of their tubeless setup.

Tubeless valves are designed to seal directly against the rim tape without the need for an inner tube, and are typically held in place by a threaded locknut that clamps against the rim bed to create an airtight seal. Standard inner tube valves, by contrast, are an integral part of the tube itself and rely on the tube sitting correctly within the tyre and against the rim to maintain pressure. Both valve types are commonly available in Presta and Schrader formats. Tubeless valves also need to be kept clear of sealant buildup, as dried sealant inside the valve core is one of the most common causes of inflation problems in a tubeless setup. Removable valve cores, which are a feature of most quality tubeless valves, make it straightforward to clear blockages or inject additional sealant directly through the valve without breaking the tyre bead.
