Rim brakes grip the wheel rim to slow the bike, while disc brakes use a rotor mounted to the hub and a caliper near the fork or frame. You can identify your system by looking at where the brake pads make contact when you squeeze the lever. This distinction matters because rim brake and disc brake components are not interchangeable, so confirming your setup before purchasing any parts is essential.

Mechanical disc brakes use a cable to activate the caliper, making them easier to service at home and compatible with standard brake levers. Hydraulic disc brakes use fluid-filled hose to transfer force, which typically delivers more consistent and powerful stopping with less hand effort. Hydraulic systems require more specialised servicing but are the preferred choice for most mountain bikers and performance road riders who want reliable braking in varied conditions.

The first step is identifying whether your bike uses rim brakes or disc brakes, as pads are specific to each system. For disc brakes, you also need to match the pad to your caliper brand and model, since pad shapes vary between manufacturers. Consider your riding conditions too, as some compounds are better suited to wet or muddy environments while others perform best in dry conditions.

When replacing a disc brake rotor, you need to match the mounting standard on your hub, which will be either 6-bolt or Centrelock. Rotor diameter also matters, as larger rotors provide more stopping power and better heat dissipation, which is useful for descending or heavier riders. Make sure the new rotor is compatible with your existing caliper and that your frame or fork has clearance for the size you choose.

Brake cables should be replaced when they show signs of fraying, corrosion, or when braking feels sluggish or inconsistent despite proper adjustment. Hydraulic hose may need replacing if it is kinked, cracked, or if the system feels spongy after bleeding. Regular inspection of cables and hose connections is recommended, particularly before long rides or at the start of each season. As a general rule, cable-actuated systems benefit from fresh cables and housing every one to two years depending on usage and conditions, while hydraulic systems should have their fluid checked and replaced periodically to maintain consistent lever feel and stopping power.
